Tried emailing you but outlook got antsy and
refused because it said it found an "illegal
host/domain" Hotmail, what have ye done?!
anyway:
Saiyuki definitely good. You have to watch the
first series and then the reload series. The
manga, IMHO, is even better, though. The final
story arc for the first anime series doesn't
really appear in the manga. More of the manga
episodic stories turn up in the reload series.
But especially in the beginning of the first
series, the anime very closely matches the manga
art. Chick flick - ehhh...lots of character
angst, of course, and they get put through the
ringer, but lots of action too, and great
characters. Try a high holy monk who
swears, drinks and smokes, kills, and whose most
endearing comments to his companions is, "Do you
want to die?" (in the Japanese version. I haven't
really listened to the entire thing in the dub
version).
Great characters, and the music is terrific too.
Audiowise, I'd go with the original japanese with
subtitles. The voices of the Japanese actors
have much more variation and emotion, although
the american voice actor for Goku does a good job
too.
With regard to the complete series - I got the
hong-kong issues off ebay. The translations
weren't half bad. A few minor rough spots, but
especially the reload were good. I will say,
though, that the US releases not only have the
something like 8 dvd set of the first series, but
a - I forget what it's called, but I've seen it
in Suncoast and Best Buy - set that's called
something like "fully packed" or "fully loaded",
that has about twelve or more eps in a slim-case.
I've gotten some complete series from people on
ebay and can probably look up their old email
addies (some aren't ebay members any more). The
guy who did the complete Full Metal Alchemist set
did a great job (even though I do buy the
domestic release, sometimes I just have to see
the whole series before I commit to buying it.
The one place I find Japanese series fall down is
in the endings. Under the "good ride but hated
the ending" group I include Wolf's Rain and
Samurai Champloo.)
I HIGHLY recommend the Ganz series that's coming
out now. I haven't seen the whole thing, but
it's fairly cheap at Best Buy, and lol, gore,
angst, mystery, and a confused, hormonely surging
main character. It was never even shown in Japan
uncut (not for sex but for gore) until the dvd
release.
12 Kingdoms - very RPG like but really solid
animation and detailed multi-threaded storylines.
My old favorite - Generator Gawl. Very
cheap "perfect collection" on ebay (I think
that's a domestic release, too). Good story and
good twists too. Action and some comedy as well,
but it gets very serious along the way.
Hope this helps some!
